Taken by Ecclesbourne Valley Railway supporter Paul Abell, the occasion was a visit by the Nottingham University Transport Society. The images are a little blurry but considering the atrocious weather conditions on the day, they are well worth viewing for their fascinating insight into the operation of the Wirksworth Branch in the early 1970s. The images are a little blurry but considering the atrocious weather conditions on the day, they are well worth viewing for their fascinating insight into the operation of the Wirksworth Branch in the early 1970s.

Just visible through the mist is the loop installed in the late 1960s and lifted by the end of the 1970s and used to stable wagons overnight, allowing empties to be returned without the need to open the signalbox. Near Alton Manor, between Wirksworth and Idridgehay. Approaching Jebbs Lane overbridge, 1/2 mile north of Idridgehay. Idridgehay, retaining the impression of a Midland Railway country station. Approaching Duffield. Entering the branch platform at Duffield; the main line is beyond. Note the building still standing but soon to be demoloshed. Stopped opposite the token machine on the branch platform. St. Mary's Goods Yard. The signalbox was retained as a shunting frame after the introduction of multiple aspect signalling under the control of Derby PSB. Passing the site of Nottingham Road Station, closed in 1967. Derby South Junction. The line to Chaddesden sidings merges in from the left. Following the abolition of Derby North Junction and direct access to Chaddesden, trains such as ours, arriving from the North would have to reverse at Derby Station.
